On the 27th of September several of our year 8 students volunteered to take part in a community litter pick around Lightwaves in Wakefield. Students split into two groups, one collecting general litter and the other collecting alcohol related litter.
Our students were not only enthusiastic, hardworking and dedicated, they were also very creative with their litter picking skills and were very good at working with students from different schools which were there.
After only one hour of litter picking the picture shows some of the litter which was collected. This included not only pop bottles and crisp packets but also a variety of other things which had been discarded such as laundry baskets and bike tyres.
Lucy Burnley stated:
“I cannot believe how much rubbish people drop, it makes the street look awful, I am not going to drop any rubbish after seeing this.”
The litter pick created a fascinating debate amongst the young people and really made them think about what happens in the world around them and how they can be affected by it.
